Dining Babble

It might have taken just a few minutes to read, but settling on colors for our dining room mood board we shared last week was no easy task. We tend to be creatures of habit and as such we’ve found our comfy-cozy spot in the earthy colors that have a pervasive presence in our house. In fact, the entire first floor is mostly light blues, greens and neutrals.

Our floor plan makes things somewhat difficult on us. We can’t go so far off base in one room that it makes the rest of the floor look like it belongs in a different house altogether. But we really wanted to take our decor in a new direction by doing something bright, inviting, and more in tune with some of our favorite current trends.
Dining Room Mood board
So while Whitney’s mood board is seemingly playing fast and loose with dark blue and mustard colors, we hope that it will still flow nicely with the rest of the house.

We originally painted everything Navajo Sand when we moved in – so much easier to use a spray machine when you have a lot of area to cover and there’s just one color. We figured we’d repaint the walls when we got around to decorating each individual space.

In thinking about how to paint the dining room, we’ve come to realize that with the rounded corners we had put in, making the transition from one wall color to the next can be tricky. To help make sure it all flows (and avoid awkward paint lines), we probably won’t be repainting the entire dining room, instead we’ll add an accent wall  - although exactly what and where is still up for debate. This should help with the transition but still allow us to bring in some personality.

Luckily the wood laminate flooring, crown and baseboard moulding is also consistent throughout so it should allow us to take certain liberties, if you will.

We nailed down the exact color of blue we’ll be going with after we headed out on Saturday to find some of the fabric that we’ll be adding to the new dining room. This navy striped canvas should work nicely for new chair cushions (we’ll show you the table and chairs we picked up at a later date), however we’re a little concerned about how well we’ll be able to work with it since it’s a bit on the stiff side. Guess we won’t know until we dive in right?
Yellow Laundry
The mustard we’ll be bringing in doesn’t exactly go with anything on the first floor, except for the laundry room – which isn’t even close by. At least it won’t be coming from out of  (absolutely) nowhere, but close.

And then there are the accessories which we’ve not yet committed to, so there is plenty of time to put pieces around that will help keep the theme of the first floor going.

That’s what we’ve been thinking about lately. Any color challenges in decorating that have you thinking?
